How to Solve a Rubik’s Cube
Have you ever picked up a Rubik’s Cube, twisted it a few times, and then instantly regretted it? You are not alone. That little cube has been frustrating people since the 1980s, but the truth is, solving it is not about luck or being a genius. It is all about learning a few simple patterns and practicing them.
Grab your cube, get comfortable, and let’s break it down step by step.
Step 1: Understand Your Cube
Before you start twisting, take a moment to understand how the cube works. It has six faces, each with a center piece that never moves. The color of the center piece tells you what color that side should be when solved.
Step 2: Solve the White Cross
The first goal is to form a white cross on one face. While doing this, make sure the edges match the center pieces on the sides. If a piece is in the wrong place, do not panic. Sometimes, you have to move pieces out of the way before placing them correctly.
Step 3: Complete the White Layer
After making the white cross, you need to position the white corner pieces. This is where you start using simple move sequences. One of the most important is the “Right-Hand Algorithm”:
• Turn the right face up
• Turn the top face left
• Turn the right face down
• Turn the top face right
Repeat this until the white corner piece is in the correct place, then move to the next one.
Step 4: Solve the Middle Layer
With the white layer complete, focus on the middle layer. The goal is to move the edge pieces into their correct spots. If a piece is misplaced, use the Right-Hand Algorithm to move it to the top layer, then place it correctly.
Step 5: Make a Yellow Cross
The last layer is the trickiest part. The first step is forming a yellow cross on top. You might see a yellow line, an L-shape, or just a single dot. No worries. Use this move sequence:
• Turn the front face clockwise
• Turn the right face up
• Turn the top face left
• Turn the right face down
• Turn the top face right
• Turn the front face counterclockwise
Repeat if needed until you see a yellow cross.
Step 6: Position the Yellow Corners
Now, place the yellow corner pieces in their correct spots. They do not need to be rotated correctly yet, just positioned in the right place. If at least one corner is already correct, use this move:
• Turn the top face right
• Turn the left face up
• Turn the top face left
• Turn the right face up
• Turn the top face right
• Turn the left face down
• Turn the top face left
• Turn the right face down
Repeat until all corners are in the right spots.
Step 7: Final Moves to Solve the Cube
The last step is to rotate the yellow corners until the whole cube is solved. Use the Right-Hand Algorithm again, repeating it until each yellow corner is correctly aligned.
And just like that, you have solved the Rubik’s Cube!
Final Thoughts
Solving a Rubik’s Cube is all about practice. The first time might take a while, but after a few tries, it will feel much easier. Some people even solve it in under 10 seconds!
